Our History

LA Foods was started in 1990 by Michael (Max) Gold and Mark Davis. The company initially focused on helping manufacturers liquidate institutional foods and ingredients. The strategy was to look for manufacturers’ closeouts, overruns, discontinued lines, close-code dated products, factory seconds and packaging or label changes.

As LA Foods grew, it developed strong relationships with correctional facilities, schools, hospitals and other governmental institutions throughout the United States. The customer base for LA Foods has since expanded to include mass feeders, thrift stores, food banks, variety stores, “mom and pop” retailers, food processors, smorgasbords and swap meets.

In 1992, LA Foods developed a sales division that concentrated exclusively on liquidating product packaged for retail sale. The retail division has expanded rapidly and now includes sales in frozen and dry foods, health and beauty aids, household goods and other general merchandise items. The company’s vendors include many of the largest manufacturers in the world.

Over the last 25 years we have grown into a major food distributor servicing over 4,000 accounts nationwide, distributing in excess of 200,000,000 lbs of food products per year. Our customer base is diversified; including correctional facilities, schools, manufacturers, grocers, discount stores, restaurants, c-stores, emergency food relief programs, as well as, major hospitality companies and institutional feeders. Our ability to provide customers fair pricing on quality products has built LA Foods into a food industry leader.

LA Foods enjoys distribution coast to coast and border to border and is served by distribution centers that are strategically located throughout the United States. Our Chef Maxwell, El Patron, Paseo, Goldmark and Katie’s Finest product lines have become the standard of exceptional food value and quality.

How can LA Foods offer better pricing  than other wholesalers?

The answer is simple: Because our distribution is concentrated on customers in markets that are not typically within the manufacturer’s target audience. Our markets include prisons, schools, hospitals, local, state and federal governments, food banks, deep-discount thrift stores and other non-traditional outlets that are not brand-oriented.

The manufacturers we work with provide us with exceptional NET pricing understanding that the product they sell us will not end up competing in their primary marketplace.

Factories often have significant extra capacity in off seasons giving us the opportunity to negotiate exceptional savings that we can then pass along to our customers. Our customers can count on LA Foods for tremendous value and superior service.
